Accidental Discharge of Pepper Spray by Student Causes Evacuation at Deep Creek Middle School

On Dec. 11 at 8:32 a.m, Baltimore County Police and Fire personnel responded to Deep Creek Middle School in the 1000 block of Marlyn Avenue in Essex for a report of a strange odor. The odor caused the evacuation of students from the school.

An investigation into the incident has indicated that a 12-year-old female seventh grade student had brought a small can of pepper spray to school, which accidentally discharged. The discharge affected multiple students and teachers. Police have taken the pepper spray container into evidence. Any criminal charges against the student will depend on the outcome of the investigation.

Many students were evaluated by medical personnel at the scene in reference to this incident; however only eight students and one teacher were transported to area hospitals for further evaluation.

Students were allowed back into the school at approximately 9:45 a.m.

Approximately 21 pieces of Baltimore County Fire Department equipment were assigned to the incident.
